March 26, 2018
In March 2018, Great Mills High School in Maryland was the theater of yet another school shooting.
State Senator (D) Rich Madaleno had, since he first took office in 2002 in the Maryland legislature, regularly proposed gun violence prevention legislation, especially on school grounds. Governor Larry Hogan never acted on them.
But after the school shooting, the Governor introduced his own bill late in the legislative session - so as to have it approved in a rush. But the bill included other unrelated features and necessitated an uncalled-for constitutional change.
When opposition was met to rush approval of the bill, the Governor claimed the Democratic representatives were being partisan and were refusing to legislate on gun control.
